Dress appropriately

Listen more than you speak

The most important thing when you are negotiating is to listen, listen and then give your perspective without getting emotionally charged at the other person. Gates is an excellent listener and it was years ago that he was locked in the toughest negotiating encounters he had to ever face with Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs when Jobs has claimed the Microsoft Windows was a complete copy of the operating system that Apple was using at that time which in reality was actually liberally borrowed by Apple from Xerox.

And this was the key as he listened, remained calm and handled the situation with a response that calmed things down and the two founders later sorted things out.

Don’t let your emotions take over

Gates secret to negotiating may also be attributed to another fact that he is a little less emotional, not unemotional but rather a little less emotional as he knows that when dealing with people emotions need to be kept aside.

Anger, ego, anxiety and fear of exploitation hinder the process of an effective negotiation and the key over here is to be self-aware having a capacity to figure out quickly what triggered or what can trigger an emotional response analyzing the other person without getting emotional on the responses. Avoid garden tools that run on gasoline

 The engine in a gas-powered lawn mower produces eight times the pollution that a car engine does. The best option is human energy: push a hand mower, and use a rake instead of a leaf blower. Your neighbors will appreciate the peace and quiet, and your body will get a free workout!

Buy products with less packaging

 It takes a lot of energy to make packaging, and VOCs are generated during the printing process. More packaging also means more solid waste, putting an extra strain on our landfills. 

Screen savers use energy

Make sure your computer automatically switches to sleep mode and turn your monitors off if you can.

Check your walls for cracks

Check for holes or cracks around your walls, ceilings, windows, doors, lights and plumbing fixtures, switches, and electrical outlets that can leak air into or out of your home. Caulk and insulate everywhere.

Things You Can Do To Stop Global Warming – University of Atlanta Explore, Educate and Evolve Campaign

It’s our duty to take care of Mother Nature and play our part in making this world a better place. What is Global Warming?

Global Warming is the increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to effect of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels or from deforestation, which trap heat that would otherwise escape from Earth. This is a type of greenhouse effect.

What Can We Do to Stop Global Warming?

Global Warming is an intensely urgent and serious problem. We don’t need to wait for governments to find a solution for this problem: each individual can bring a significant help adopting a more responsible lifestyle: starting from small, everyday things. It’s the only reasonable way to save our planet, before it is too late.

Clean filters on your furnace and air conditioner

Did you know that cleaning a dirty air filter can save 350 pounds of carbon dioxide a year?

Do not leave machines on standby

Use the “on/off” function on the machine itself. A TV set that’s switched on for 3 hours a day and in standby mode during the remaining 21 hours uses about 40% of its power in standby mode.

Cover your pots while cooking

Doing so can save a lot of the energy needed for preparing the dish. Even better are pressure cookers and steamers: they can save around 70%!

Take a shower instead of a bath

A shower takes up to four times less energy than a bath. To make the most of the energy saving, avoid power showers and use low-flow showerheads, which are less costly and provide the same comfort.

Use a clothesline instead of a dryer whenever possible

Do you know that you can actually save 700 pounds of carbon dioxide when you air dry your clothes for 6 months out of the year?

Plant a tree

A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. Shade provided by trees can also reduce your air conditioning bill by 10 to 15%.

Our land is our treasure and to save it from hazards is our social responsibility. We want you to make smart choices and save the mother earth. The message of Reduce, Reuse & Recycle, is to eliminate problems such as global warming and deforestation. With University of Atlanta Explore, Educate and Evolve Campaign, follow these 3R’s and help create a better world.

REDUCE

The best way to manage waste is to not produce it. This can be done by shopping carefully and being aware of a few guidelines:

Tips that can help you contribute.

-          Buy products in bulk, avoid over-packaged goods, especially ones packed with several materials such as foil, paper, and plastic.

-          Make sure that you always purchase durable goods - ones that are well-built or that which carry warranties.

REUSE

It makes economic and environmental sense to reuse products. Sometimes it takes creativity.

-          One can save paper and plastic bags, repair broken appliances, toys and furniture.

-          Use reseal-able containers rather than plastic wraps.  Use ceramic coffee mug instead of paper cups.

RECYCLE

The process of recycling means to make a new product out of an old product.

 You can contribute by:

-          Purchase goods made from recycled material. Look for the recycling symbol or ask store managers or salesmen.

-          Check collection centers and curbside pickup services to see what they accept, and begin collecting those materials.

All you need to know about Earth Day – University of Atlanta Explore, Educate and Evolve Campaign

Earth Day is an annual event created to rejoice the planet's environment and educate about pollution. The day, marked on April 22, is observed worldwide with marches, seminars, activities and service plans. 

With University of Atlanta Explore, Educate and Evolve campaign we aim to spread awareness about our mother earth and reveal a few facts with were unknown of till now. Let’s make a different and join hands to make this world a better place. 

The Earth Day

The first Earth day was celebrated in 1970. Nelson, after seeing the damage done by a 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, was encouraged to organize a national "teach-in" that was dedicated to educate the public about the environment.

Political impact

Though Earth Day may now be symbolized with small-scale tree planting and volunteer cleanup projects, the first Earth Day actually had its sights set on bigger political projects. Earth Day protests created public support for the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency, authorized by Congress in December 1970. Earth Day also aided to the causes such as clean water, clean air and protection of endangered species acts.

Few facts about that will amaze you!

                                                                              

-       The garbage in a landfill stays for about 30 years. 

-       In 1995 over 200 of the world landfills were full.

-       Each person throws away approximately four pounds of garbage every day.

-       One bus carries as many people as 40 cars!

-       More than 1/3 of all energy is used by people at home

-       Most families throw away about 88 pounds of plastic every year

-       We each use about 12,000 gallons of water every year

-       1/3 of all water is used to flush the toilet.

-       The 500 million automobiles on earth burn an average of 2 gallons of fuel a day.

-       Each gallon of fuel releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide into the air.

-       Approximately 5 million tons of oil produced in the world each ear ends up in the ocean.

-       The energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is enough to light a traditional light bulb for four hours

-       For every 2000 pounds of paper (1 ton) recycled, we save 7,000 gallons of water free from chemicals.

-       Recycled paper requires 64% less energy than making paper from virgin wood pulp, and can save many trees

-       Every ton of paper that is recycled saves 17 trees

Learn How Atlanta's Neighborhoods Got Their Unique Names – University of Atlanta Explore, Educate and Evolve

You may know not know that Atlanta was once called Marthasville, but do you know how it got neighborhoods like Buckhead and Just Us? With University of Atlanta Explore Educate and Evolve Campaign, we will learn how just a few of Atlanta’s neighborhoods got their names.

Here are the few most interesting explanations behind these names.

CABBAGETOWN

An ode to aroma, Cabbagetown got its name from the long-lasting whiff that resulted after the entire neighborhood around the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill cooked cabbages on the same night. It’s said that either a bus carrying them tossed them over and dropped loads of cabbages onto the street for anyone’s taking or that the driver gave the bad cabbages away.

ENGLISH AVENUE

English Avenue is named for the English family, who bought the land in the late 19th century.

KNIGHT PARK/HOWELL STATION

The neighborhood Howell Station is named after Evan P. Howell, a Confederate infantry captain who went on to serve as mayor of Atlanta. Knight Park bears the name of William T. Knight, a neighborhood resident and alderman who gave the land for a public park in 1940.

JUST US

In the 1950's, the Fountain Drive-Morris Brown Drive Community Club was re-titled Just Us, a reference to the area’s relatively small number fofor people residing  (as in, “it’s just us living here”). The neighborhood has a total of two boulevards, so it hardly needed its long new name.

MARGARET MITCHELL

Although the area bears the name of the author of Gone with the Wind, she never actually lived there. Originally named Cherokee Forest, the neighborhood adopted the name Margaret Mitchell as a nod to the Margaret Mitchell Elementary School, which was located in the area on Margaret Mitchell Drive.

WHITTIER MILL VILLAGE

The Whittier Mill is named after the Whittier family. After successfully running a mill in Massachusetts, the Whittiers opened a southern branch in Atlanta in 1896.

THE CNN Center – House of News

The CNN Center is the world headquarters of CNN. The main newsrooms and studios for numerous of CNN's news channels are located in this house. The facility's commercial office space is occupied entirely by CNN and its parent company, Turner Broadcasting System, a subsidiary of Time Warner.

What attracts tourist the most?

The tour starts in a small theater with an explanation of the control room function then progresses to a set mock up complete with newscaster desk and green screen. Tourist can get their picture taken behind the presenter’s desk and buy it at the end of the tour in the CNN Store.

Something for Everyone

Once they continue the mock set they get to look into the CNN world headquarters set, the CCN Atlanta set, and CNN Espanol. Then the tour ends with a small video highlighting their top news anchors, such as Soledad O'Brien and Wolf Blitzer and a stop at the CNN store. People who are interested in becoming anchors can get a proper newscast done with professional attire.

Hotels in CNN Center

The indoor portion of CNN center used to be an amusement park. Now it's a spacious open concept food court area. There are hotels and offices all linked to this building as well as the CNN World HQ with the various Turner type showcase such as Cartoon Network, Atlanta Braves and CNN stores.

The Indoor Structure

One thing that really amuses the visitors is the tables which are actually a map of the world.  This is something not really easy to see unless you are on the top floors.

Georgia Cyclone

There is nothing more exciting than a wooden roller coaster ride. The remarkable wooden architecture unfolds over 2,970 feet of track. But before you go anywhere you’ll first have to climb up a 95-foot hill. It’s so tall there’ll be plenty of time to savor the long haul up to the great adventure waiting on the other side.

In fact, many courageous heroes have been on this riddle before you, on this triple-looping 50 mile-per-hour steel roller coaster. This classic looper has been shocking riders for many years now.
